Filipina vs. The English Language

I am married to a most wonderful young lady who just so happens to be from the Philippines.  She is smart, hard working, and pleasingly feminine.   This last trait is something that our current American culture seems determined to beat out of young women, which is a tragedy for the majority of us who have to live with the consequences of this social experimentation.

But lamenting the foolishness of radical cultural programming is not my purpose here.  Rather I wish to, in a good hearted way, relay some of her fumblings with the English language.

English is not my wife's first language.  She grew up speaking Bisaya, a dialect common to the southern islands of the Philippine archipelago.  (Yes, I had to look up the word "archipelago" to ensure it really meant what I thought it did, and to see how to spell it.  English is hard!)  Bisaya is spoken on the island of Cebu, where it is called Cebuano.  The people from the island of Bohol speak a variant of the language called Boholese.  As my wife is from Mindanao, she refers to her language as Bisaya.

More Filipinos speak Bisaya than Tagalog, but since the folks who live in the areas of Luzon around Manila speak Tagalog, the "official language" of the Philippines, ("Filipino", I believe), is based on Tagalog, not Bisaya.  So my wife also speaks Tagalog.

English is therefore her third language.  Considering this, she speaks it quite well.  (In comparison, my feeble attempts to speak Bisaya are met with confused stares and/or shrugged shoulders.)  However, there are times when her internal translator seems to fail her, most notably dealing with directions or gender.

Apparently Bisaya doesn't have gender specific pronouns such as "he" or "she", or "his" or "hers".  The inability to use the correct pronoun is common amongst her friends too, leading to the mother often being corrected by a child saying, "No Mom, it's "HE" not "SHE"!"  While I suppose advocates of multiple genders and "gender fluidity", (whatever the heck that is!), would welcome such a linguistic concept, to me it is just a minor quirk we all have learned to live with.

"Right" and "left" are often interchanged, many times leading to my snarky comment, "Oh, you meant the OTHER right?"  This is usually just another linguistic quirk we overlook, except when I am driving and asking for directions.  Then it can become irritating.  (Or, as my wife would say, I become needlessly upset over nothing.)

Finally, I would like to relate two specific examples of my wife's "Filipina English" that I find particularly amusing.

1. Positive Smelly Thing.  One day soon after my wife had arrived in the USA, and she was still adapting to speaking English instead of Bisaya, we were out walking and she said to me, "You're a smelly thing."  I was taken aback by this, and asked her why she said that.  She then explained to me that I was a "positive smelly thing", meaning she liked the way I smelled.

2. Rabbits aren't mammals; they're rodents.  Although wrong on BOTH counts, (rabbits are NOT rodents, but they most certainly are mammals), the intent of this statement was not to deny that rabbits are mammals, but rather clarify that they are rodents.

Interestingly rabbits were in fact once considered rodents.  It wasn't until the early 20th century that scientists decided to classify them as something else.  Who knows ..... maybe in the future they'll be lumped back in with rats, mice, and squirrels into one big happy group of furry little animals.

P.S.  In Mindanao frogs make the sound, "Kokak", whereas here in America they go, "Ribbit".  The reason why our American frogs don't croak, "Kokak" is obvious, if you think about it.  American frogs don't know Bisaya!

Bluegreen Sucks!!

I seem to have bad luck with companies that start with the word "Blue"!

Back in 2018, near the end of August, I got a nice contract position for the state of Georgia.  It paid a hefty, (to me!), rate of $45/hr, and despite being located in Atlanta, I didn't think the cost of getting an apartment there would be too onerous.  (I was very, very wrong.)

Anyway ..... flush with overconfidence regarding my newfound wealth, I foolishly decided that it would be a good idea to associate myself with the liars and cheaters of Bluegreen, and dragged my family along to attend one of their sales presentations in Savannah, GA.  We tossed away about $16,000 to "buy" a timeshare property from these jerks, and went away happy as a flock of fools can be with our new purchase.

A few months went by, and after some more hard sell pressure, this time in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, we found ourselves owning two timeshares from these clowns, down about $34,000, and much less satisfied with our purchases.  It wasn't until the subsequent April, when we were on vacation in Orlando, that we realized the true folly of our dealings with Bluegreen.  (Being an extremely slow learner, I bought yet another timeshare on that trip too, this time from a different company.)

As 2019 plodded on, we realized that buying the timeshares from Bluegreen had been a HUGE mistake, and so we decided to sell them.  We had been assured during both purchasing transactions that we could always sell our timeshares for about half of what we paid for them, which meant we would lose about $17,000.  Ouch!

But the real pain hit later.  After just a little research, it became painfully obvious that not only were these timeshares worthless, (in that NO ONE IN THEIR RIGHT MIND would even consider buying them without extreme sales pressure), but that we would HAVE TO PAY a legal firm to get the stupid things off our hands.  Double OUCH!!

By the end of 2019 we were finally free of Bluegreen, at a cumulative cost to us, (purchase of the timeshares + legal services), of over $40,000!!

I remember asking one of the lawyers how could this be legal, and he simply explained to me that since a lot of money is involved, congress critters could be "swayed" to legislate in a way favorable to the unethical timeshare industry.

The moral of this story, boys and girls, is simple.  Never trust the words of someone trying to sell you something, PARTICULARLY A BLUEGREEN TIMESHARE SALESMAN!  And don't count on the legal system to bail you out once you realize you've been swindled.

Caveat emptor!

This Fool is back to Running Errands

Late last year I posted about how trying to make a living online is too difficult given the unlikely odds of a reasonable success.

When I wrote that, I was comfortably earning $50/hr on an easy contract at a nice company just two or three miles up the road.  (Lots of money and almost no commute; what a dream job!)  Well, all things must pass, and this past March that contract ended.  (Bummer!  I nearly cried when that job folded!)

I've been looking for a replacement contract since, but not being the world's greatest interviewee, I haven't gotten any job offers yet.

After being unemployed for a couple months, I hit upon the idea of selling Life Insurance, and even went to all the trouble, (and expense), of getting licensed and appointed to sell the stuff, only to realize that .... well, I don't really like Life Insurance, and I sure as hell can't sell something I don't believe in.  If you need Life Insurance, my advice is to buy the cheapest TERM insurance you can find.  Although some people swear by it, (self delusion?  or maybe they are swearing AT IT!), I personally wouldn't touch Whole Life insurance or Universal Life insurance with a thirty nine and a half foot pole.  (Hats off to the good Doctor and that reformed meanie, Mr. Grinch.)

So ..... with perhaps a hint of desperation, I turned back to that former elusive goal of mine, namely, making money online.

First I had to clean up the mess that I had allowed my various websites to become, fixing up pages that had become dated or obsolete.  Then it was on to ways to make a buck or three.

Of course I had to play with Bitcoin a little, trying out the faucets I once knew.  You can make a teeny, tiny bit of money with Bitcoin faucets, but certainly not enough to live on.  (Unless you can live on 25¢ a day!)

After that silliness we sat down and thought about ways we could actually make some money, and decided to give the T-Shirt business a shot.  Kuya, (our nine year old son), even got in on the act, designing his own shirt:

Our first "collection" is a series of variations on the State "Bird" theme: https://teespring.com/stores/state-birds-mosquitoes.  Here is an example:

If you're hopelessly enamored with small blood sucking insects, we have a pillow and a beach towel that you may be interested in.

Besides all mosquito stuff, I managed to fix the links in the remnant of Awkward Uncle's Online Store.  Silliness on the part of my hosting provider at the time, (Bluehost), caused both my Awkward Uncle and Tea Universe stores to disappear about this time last year.  Tea Universe is history now, (any old links will take you to some page written in what I guess is Chinese), but I'm trying to bring Awkward Uncle back from the dead.

p.s. - a really cruddy youtube video more-or-less summarizing all this: https://youtu.be/SL9SWSwtu9c .

Making Money Online is a Fool's Errand

If you read my last post, you know that I recently decided to "invest" in Bitcoin to see if I could make some money online.  Actually "invest" is a bit of a misnomer; "gamble" would be a more accurate description.

What this crazy old man did is buy some Bitcoin, (nothing necessarily wrong with that, and if I had just held on to my Bitcoin I'd have TWICE as much money now!), then "invest" ...... er, I mean "gamble", these Bitcoins away by transferring them to various online HYIPs.

What is a HYIP, you ask?  Well, rather than sugar coat it, I'll just tell you the truth: a HYIP is a site created by criminals who sucker stupid people, (such as me!), into giving them their money, (or, in my case, Bitcoins), by promising ridiculously high returns, such as 3% A DAY, (or 12% A WEEK), on your "investment".  These sites have nothing but their promise to actually pay backing their claims, so it should come as no surprise that I lost a small, (but still painful), amount of money to them.  DO NOT GIVE THESE JERKS YOUR MONEY, UNLESS YOU DON'T CARE THAT YOU'LL NEVER GET IT BACK!!

But the worst part of my aborted Bitcoin adventure was all that time that I wasted, fussing around online, attempting to discover which HYIPs were "legit".  (Hint:  NONE of them are.)

This latest online disappointment, combined with my quitting retirement for a very good job, has finally convinced me that attempting to make money online is a silly way to spend my time.  Yes, some folks do make quite a lot of money doing it, but then some folks also make a lot of money being an artist or a musician.  That certainly doesn't mean that I would recommend anyone become an artist or musician as a livelihood!  You should only become an artist or musician if not doing so would make your life not worth living, as the odds are you will not be able to support yourself.

I would lump "making a living online" in with being an artist or musician.  Do it if you must, but understand that there are much, much easier ways to make a comfortable living.

My New Online Adventure

Just recently, (a month ago), I retired.  This was probably a premature decision, but the rationale behind this madness was that, finally, I was going to be able to devote full time attention to my various websites, particularly the ones like Tea Universe where I was attempting to make a buck or two on Amazon affiliate sales.

Ha!  Life had other plans.

If you've read my prior posts, you know that I was kinda sucker punched by Bluehost, and now my Tea Universe site is, well, wimpy dead.

Disgusted with how things worked out, I haven't had much interest in doing anything at all online.  Not to mention that, now that I am no longer working out of town, my wife is taking full advantage of my presence, the result being that most of my time now is occupied with babysitting the kids.

In my demoralized state most of my time online was just frittered away in one silly thing or another, until I happened to land upon a really cool site called Beer Money Forum.

BMF, as it is called, is a website that tries to help folks make some money online.  In one section of this site there is a place where folks discuss cyber currencies.

I've been interested in Bitcoin and other cyber currencies for a while now, but, intimidated by "the unknown", I never bought any.  The discussions on BMF convinced me that cyber currencies weren't so confusing after all, and that this may be something I could learn and dabble with, to my financial benefit.

Thus my "cryptocurrency journey".

The idea of a currency that isn't created by a government appeals to my inner anarchist, yet my inner control freak is soothed by its mathematical underpinnings.  And you know what?  Messing around with Bitcoin and the other "alt coins" is fun!

So why not get your own Coinbase wallet and join my on this adventure?  Maybe we'll all become rich?

Our "Net Worth" - an Update (August/2017)

A Confused Old Grump

When we last posted our net worth about a year ago,  (http://owlsandcuckoos.blogspot.com/2016/07/our-net-worth-update.html), we had a cool half million, more or less.  Now that Grump recently got a bug up his butt and quit his job, (er, excuse me - "retired"), we figured it was a good time to update this figure.

Between now and then lots has happened, mostly bad.

The sole good news is that, until last week, Grump was still employed, and bringing home a paycheck.

The bad news, of course, begins with the fact that this employment is no more, so we will have to be finding other ways to support ourselves.  (Pulling up the pillows on the couch looking for loose change?)  But the real cruddy news had to do with an obscenely expensive, (over $8,000.00!!), vacation that Sweetie, Lola, and the boys took to the Philippines this past spring.  (Mindanao island specifically, just before martial law was declared there.  Ugh!)  Add to this the fact that we are paying to completely rebuild Sweetie's sister's house in her home village, (and this costs MUCH more than you would expect it to cost in such a poor part of a poor country), and you can imagine what a train wreck our finances, and thus net worth, should be.

Here is where it gets really weird.  Despite all this mess, would you believe our net worth actually INCREASED, to almost $580,000.00 ?

HUH??

I can't fully explain what is going on here, (grossly overpriced stock market?  basic arithmetic errors?  cosmic intervention?), but it does seem that despite our fiscal recklessness, we continue to get richer.

But we'll see how long this good fortune continues, now that Grump is unemployed!

1. ASSETS:  $700,000.00

This is crazy.  Most of our assets are in stocks.  I believe that the stock market is in a huge bubble, and that once this bubble bursts the value of our assets will shrink down to reality.  But for the time being, it is what it is.

2. LIABILITIES:  $120,000.00

I'm actually proud of this number.  Yeah, we took money out of our savings to help pay this down from the $140,000 we owed a year ago, but still, reducing debt by $20,000/year is a good thing.  I hope we continue to chip away at our debt like this, rather than do stupid things like spending $8,000.00+ to fritter away a month in the Philippines.

$700,000 - $120,000  =  $580,000 , which is our new NET WORTH!

I'm as perplexed by this as anyone else.

Making Money Online is TOUGH!!

So I've been trying to make some extra money online now for a little over year, and I have to say ...... it's a mighty tough way to make a little extra dough!

Now I have to admit I'm very, very bad at following instructions, and I've been trying to do this in my spare time, but still, for the amount of time and effort I've put into it, I'm not really seeing much of a return.

Maybe I'm choosing a poor method?  I'm using the "advertise via Tumblr, (and a bit of Pinterest)" approach, whereby I try to get lots of followers to a few Tumblr accounts, and then add posts that link back to my "money" sites.  My money sites at the moment are two Amazon "stores":  1) Tea Universe, ( http://tea-universe.com  or  http://buyingnirvana.com/teashop ), and 2) Awkward Uncle's Curiosity Shop, ( http://www.awkwarduncle.com  or  http://arph001.com/uncle ).  As of 07/2018, I am down to one store: https://awkwarduncle.wordpress.com/ .

I started Tea Universe first, early last year.  At first sales were slow, (VERY slow!), but towards the end of the year things began to pick up a bit, with sales in December approaching $40.00 .  (Yes, that's for the whole month.  I told you this was a difficult way to make money!)  January sales were also good, but February sales dipped down below $30.00, and March sales didn't even break $20.00.

So far April looks to be even worse.

As for "Awkward Uncle" .....  Ha!  Don't even ask!  Sales from that store are so poor they can't even be called a rounding error!

I'm also using Adsense, but that has proven a futile way to earn money as well, at least for me.  Besides, based on the experiences websites I'm familiar with have had with Google, I wouldn't rely on that company as your main source of income.  (And note that I'm actually toning this comment down since I'm writing on a Google site!)

Maybe I'm just not very good at creating interesting Tumblrs?  These are mine, if you want to check them out:

I also have some other blogs floating around, but since I devote about the same amount of time to them that I do to this neglected blog, they're kinda lonely.  (Unread and unloved!)

So what's the point of all this, other than to whine?  The point is that IMHO the best way to financial independence is the old tried-and-true routine of being paid for highly skilled labor.

For example, take me.  I consider myself a chap of middling intelligence, and meager ambition, but thanks to a skill I learned in my early twenties, I've done okay.  The skill I picked up was how to program in COBOL on IBM mainframe computers, and I've been able to make a good living using that skill for close to 40 years now.

I make about $70,000/year now, which includes holidays, vacation days, sick time off, a 401k match, and subsidized health insurance.  I work in the comfort of an office building, sitting on an ergonomic chair.  The only hazards I face are grumpy boss types, boring assignments, the irritations of dealing with bureaucracy, and an occasional back-stabbing co-worker.

Do you think making affiliate sales on Amazon will provide you a good, stable income for 40 years?

My point is this: study hard while you're still in school, apply yourself to the difficult, unsexy subjects, and then work hard to be very good at a skill that not everyone possess.  If you do this, you'll have a much better chance of financial success than the guy who opts to take the easy route and gets a degree in philosophy.  (That was me at one point, by the way.  Fortunately I had the time and resources to recover from this stupid choice.)

I'm not the only one who says this; as best I can follow him, (he is a brighter bulb than me!), this is also the message of the venerated Mr. Money Mustache.

Sure, the idea of working independently from home, away from grumpy bosses and mind-numbing meetings, is appealing and perhaps fun, but if you really want to make lots of money you need to do the type work that not everybody is capable of doing, either due to lack of ability or training.  Even if that includes wasting two hours in a ridiculous meeting when you have an unrealistic deadline to meet.

Even a Moron Can Make a Little Affiliate Income

Duh ..........

So I recently got a small affiliate marketing payment from Amazon, $12.89 to be exact.  This represents my affiliate income for the ENTIRE YEAR so far, and while incredibly tiny, is at least a start.  (Better than nothing, huh?)  But the really pathetic thing about all this is that I should have received payment at the end of September, only ...... I was such a dummy that I typed my checking account number incorrectly into my Amazon affiliate profile!

D'oh!!

Oh well.  It took a month and a half to get my mess straightened out, but Amazon did eventually repay me, and now I am a SUCCESSFUL INTERNET MARKETER, albeit the most modestly compensated one, (at least so I hope!).

A note on my business methods: I have been following Franklin Hatchett's "Dominate Tumblr" concept, (https://www.onlinedimes.com/how-make-money-on-tumblr/), because it is simple and monotonous, which is ideal for a lazy, senile old fart like me.  The only problem is that it really isn't the best way to make affiliate sales.  Oh sure, Amazon is great for a rank beginner like me, but it does appear that the ONLY way to really make an acceptable income, (which I define as at least $100/day), is by creating an email list.  Ugh!

I don't know about you, but I HATE having my email inbox jammed up with marketing offers.  But yet, to make a decent amount of cash online, that's exactly what I have to do to other people.  Moral dilemma time!

Better listen to Mr. Lehrer!  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3BDyFuDxA-I

P.S.  I suppose I would be remiss if I didn't include links to my Amazon "stores":

Tea Universe  -  http://tea-universe.com  and  http://buyingnirvana.com/teashop  (as of 08/2017, gone but not forgotten!)

A Dream of Paradise Shattered?

For years now I have had this dream, (fantasy? illusion?), of someday moving to another country, where the day-to-day expenses are lower, and my "estate" could support me and my family longer.  Added to this was my dream of "earning money on the internet", (to date this has been a bust!), which created an image of yours truly sitting under the coconut trees*, laptop on my lap, idly pecking away at my keyboard while the dollars flowed into my bank account, and I lived like only the super rich do back in the USA.

There are plenty of websites touting the expat lifestyle, but one which early on caught my eye was Bob Martin's http://liveinthephilippines.com.  My wife is also from the Philippines, so getting her to move back there would be much less of a struggle than, say, getting her to move to Panama.

Bob seemed to have it all going for him.  He was a successful internet marketer, making "big money" (?) online for years, all while living a great life in Davao City in the southern part of the Philippines.  (In case you didn't know, Davao is the city the Philippines current president, Duterte, used to be mayor of, and is considered one of the safest cities in Asia.)  He was a guy I was going to emulate.

Then all of a sudden we get this:  https://www.gofundme.com/2qjcm7as?utm_medium=wdgt.

First of all, if you are able, I hope you can spare Bob a buck or two.  I don't know him personally, only through his website, but as best I can tell he is a decent human being.

But getting back to the point of this article ....... this really sucks!!

I know medical expenses are a dreadful thing, (medical expenses have destroyed our budget this year), and I believe they are the leading cause of bankruptcy in the USA, but I thought Bob had all this covered.  I thought he was keeping his expenses low, and his income high, such that when bad luck drops a figurative brick on our head like this, he would be able to handle it.

I guess not.

My first reaction is to have the inner skeptic in me start screaming.  Maybe Bob didn't really make all that much money online?  Maybe his claims to be running a successful internet business from the Philippines were just BS?  Or maybe he was a fool, and spent all his money, and didn't have any insurance or savings for a rainy day?

Or maybe he was a smart, successful guy, who just got hit with a perfect storm of expenses?

I guess no matter where you live, or what your income level is, health care costs can devastate you?

Ugh!

The "good news", (such as it is), from all this mess is that, in his latest update, he indicates that PhilHealth will be paying him some money towards his life-saving heart operation.  Hopefully Bob will continue to get more and more good news like this in the future.

So .......

The takeaway from this awful experience is that, when planning your escape to your particular paradise, PLEASE remember to have a contingency plan, and the cash or credit set aside to help fund it.

* - Although "those who know better" laugh at me, having been around real coconut trees, and seen how high up in the tree the coconuts are, there is NO WAY I will ever, ever, ever sit under a coconut tree!

Online Income Statement - June, July, August/2016

It's a good thing I don't count on online income to pay the bills, because for the last three months it has been a constant zero!  And this isn't for lack of effort!  (A lack of intelligence perhaps, but I have worked at it.)

I sincerely hope I am the least successful internet affiliate in the world, because if other folks are doing as poorly as me, then there's a whole lot of effort being wasted online.

Well ...... maybe it's not a total catastrophe.  I do have some money queued up in my Amazon affiliate accounts, and once one of them breaks the $10.00 limit I should get a deposit in my Paypal account.  Still, $10.00 isn't exactly a huge amount of money.

Things got so bad I even go back to Clickworker from time to time.  And this is Clickworker WITHOUT access to UHRS, (which is where most of the money is made), because I refuse to back to working on a Windows PC.  (We use Apple PCs in our household.)  So I "earn" pennies a day.

Ugh ......

But the internet gods apparently haven't finished humiliating me, because just recently I updated the software on my tea store, ( tea-universe.com ), and now ...... the site doesn't work anymore!!

My store uses WooCommerce, the WooZone plugin, (to grab products off Amazon), and the Kingdom theme.  Two days ago I updated Kingdom to version 1.7, and everything went wonky.  This surprised me, as I thought all three pieces of software were written by the same group of folks, (AATeam, or something like that), and so would play well together.  Ha, ha .... jokes on me!

IMHO Kingdom is a hard theme to work with.  Or maybe the problem is WooCommerce?  At any rate, all this stuff combines into what ain't a normal straight-forward WordPress page.  But after fussing with it a bit I finally got the appearance of the store pretty well stabilized.  In fact, I kinda like how it looks now better than it looked on the older Kingdom theme:

The new appearance of tea-universe.com

The huge problem is that, once you attempt to checkout with items added to your cart, by the time you're redirected to Amazon the cart is somehow empty!

What happened to the items in my cart?

So what I have now is a nicer looking store that no one can order anything from.  Phooey!

I've paid $5.00 on Fiverr to some guy in India who claims he can debug WooCommerce problems.  We'll see if anything comes of that or not.

In the meantime ...... does anyone happen to know of a way to fix this problem?

Earn money in your spare time on the internet, huh?  Nonsense, I say!

=================================================================

Update: the guy from India directed me to some documentation, which helped, and made some suggestions, which so for haven't worked.  So what I have done is disable the shopping cart altogether.  Now you simply click "buy product" and get redirected to Amazon to complete the order, (add it to your shopping cart, and check out).

If I have time I may fight with this crazy software some more, but in the meantime at least tea-universe.com is functional again.

Our "Net Worth" - an Update (July/2016)

About a year and a half ago we posted an entry about our "net worth", ( http://owlsandcuckoos.blogspot.com/2015/02/our-net-worth.html ).  Rather than write another blah post about our meager online "earnings", (earnings?  hah!!), for the month, I figured now would be a good time to update those old figures.

1. Assets:  $640,000.00

I wish we could take credit for socking away an additional $40,000 in 18 months, but the truth is that our increase here is mostly due to the performance of our investments, and less cautious accounting on my part when determining account value.  But that's okay; and extra $40,000 is great regardless of its origin.

2. Liabilities:  $140,000.00

Well phooey!  I was hoping we had paid off more on the condo, (still owe about $47,000), and the car, (still owe about $10,000), but those debts are still huge.  And of course the never ending revolving consumer debt continues to hobble us, which wasn't helped in the least by BOTH of our boys, (Kuya and Dodong), being rushed to the emergency room recently.  But you know, it just costs money to live.  All things considered, I don't think we're doing too bad considering that we're supporting five of us.

$640,000  -  $140,000  =   $500,000, which is our net worth.  Half a million!  Woo hoo!!

Unfortunately, all the comments from our prior net worth post still apply.

1.  We are spending more money than we are earring.  We still cash in non-IRA savings to help pay the bills.  (Just yesterday Old Grump cashed in $2,400 to help cover a bloated Amex card bill.)

2.  The increase in our net worth seemingly occurs DESPITE our behavior, due to interest and dividends, I suppose.

This is a financially reckless way to live, as sooner or later the market will crash again, and then our redemptions will harm our principal, (or is it "principle"  -  stupid English language!), balance.

Live frugally, and may your pennies become dimes, and your dimes become dollars!

P.S.  -  I forgot to include a link to the net worth page!  Here it is:  http://rockstarfinance.com/blogger-net-worths/ .

Online Income Statement - May/2016

Well let's see ...... if the coins in the pic above are mostly pennies, then that may accurately reflect what we made online last month, namely $5.48.  This was entirely from Clickworker, and represents stuff mostly done last month, as I have been ignoring Clickworker in favor of promoting my Amazon store.

So how much money did we rake in from our Amazon store in May 2016?  A big, fat, stinky NUTHIN!!

Yuck!  Goose eggs for our efforts.

I think the big trick to getting sales from the "Tumblr promotion technique", (
http://www.onlinedimes.com/how-make-money-on-tumblr/), is to have LOTS AND LOTS of followers.  Thousand at least; tens of thousands if you want to make the big bucks.  I spent most of the last few weeks of May, (and the first few weeks of this month), trying to build up our followers on our Tumblr accounts, arph001.tumblr.com and tea-frenzy.tumblr.com .  It looks like this may, (or may not - stay tuned!), pay off, as sales have begun to trickle in again.

The huge liability to this technique is should anything happen to our Tumblr accounts, we lose all our publicity.   :-(

In the meantime, I suppose I should go back to Clickworker every now and then, just to get some money coming in?  (Who knows - Clickworker does get tedious after a while, and the money earned isn't anything to really brag about.)

Earning money online takes time and lots of effort, and anyone who says or implies otherwise is a liar.  I wish it were as easy as sitting in your underwear looking at porn, but - alas! - it is not.  Then again, the older I get, the more I realize that all worthy endeavors take time and lots of effort.  There are no shortcuts.

Online Income Statement - April/2016

CHARGE!!

First the good news: after a long, lonely lonely time, (yeah, it's a GREAT SONG!), we finally made some money on an affiliate sale.  Money was actually deposited by Amazon into our bank account.  Woo hoo!

How much?  Well ..... (cough, cough) ..... the whopping sum of 88¢.

There are more commissions queued up, (adding up to dollars even!), but until they clear they don't count.

Now the bad news: I had noticed that sales at our online tea store, ( http://tea-universe.com ), had dropped off in April.  Wondering why, I logged on and discovered that most of our products had been "disabled".  Grrr!!  What apparently happened is that the software, (Woo Zone, WooCommerce, and the Kingdom theme), had flipped out during a product update and moved nearly all the products into the trash category.  Because of my, uh, "inattentiveness", they had probably been sitting there for weeks.  Good grief!

If, like me, you are following the advice on www.onlinedimes.com, ( http://www.onlinedimes.com/how-make-money-on-tumblr/ is the exact link), and trying to make money with an Amazon store via Tumblr, note that folks have complained about the Woo software, and that he now gives an alternative, ReHub Amazon, or something like that.  I bought the Woo software, so I'm trying to make the best of it, and honestly I don't know if that latest problem was a software bug or a stupid user trick.  Someday when I'm more successful I'll try some other software, and see which I like better.

And I'm still trying to figure out the best way to stock and market our store.  Should I offer many variations of the same product, like our morning thunder page?

We've got a long, lonely lonely way to go before we even break even, but unlike some of our other online ventures this tea store is fun.  Wish us better luck next month, and we hope you too have a profitable month online.

Online Income Statement - March/2016

No income this month, just expenses!  $60.00 for internet access, and some miscellaneous stuff, which means I'll round our monthly expenses up to $70.00.  So for the year, we're about -$300.00 .

If you're trying to make some money online, I hope you're doing better than we are!

One final thing: I've learned the hard way not to count online income until it's actually in your bank account.  There are LOTS of rip-off "money-making" sites out there: be careful!!  And until you actually have the cash in hand, don't assume you'll ever get it!

Online Income Statement - February/2016

This was an interesting month for online "income", as we actually LOST money.  $230.00, to be exact.  Yuck!

As explained in http://buyingnirvana.com/words/novice-affiliate-part-07/, we had some one-time costs associated with getting our Amazon store, Tea-Universe, ( http://tea-universe.com ), up and running.  To date we haven't had a gushing stream of income to offset these expenses, so what we have at the moment is simply an expensive hobby.  (One that we apparently spend too much time and money on!)

We did get a little over $80.00 from Clickworker, but understand that this was the accumulation from several months worth of "clickworking".  I've been doing less on Clickworker recently as we only have Apple PCs at the moment, and UHRS, (the real money making part of Clickworker), seems to work best on Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser.

So there really isn't all that much to report for February, and what there is to report isn't all that great. Hopefully March will be a better month.  (I don't know ..... it's starting out VERY SLOW!)

May we all make LOTS and LOTS of money this month!

Online Income Statement - January 2016

The bottom line is that there was no online income last month.  I got tired of fussing with Clickworker, and as I don't have any other online income streams going at the moment, no gushing rivers of cash flowed into my bank account.

Now I do have to clarify this with two items:

1. I got a 1099 from Clickworker for my yearly earnings, which were about $1,030.00 .  That's not too bad, but I'd like to increase that by a factor of 50 this year.

.... which brings me to ....

2. I'm jumping back into affiliate marketing!  As explained in this article,  http://buyingnirvana.com/words/novice-affiliate-part-06/ , I think I finally found a method that will work for me.  I've already set up an online store called Tea Universe!  ( http://tea-universe.com )  Check it out and let me know what you think!

We finally got our ridiculous debt under control.  I had to sell some investments to do it, but it was worth it.  Debt sucks!  This also points out the value of having diversified investments.  As most of you know, stocks haven't been doing great lately, but municipal bonds, of which I own a few, are currently priced at inflated values.  I sold a few of these, and hammered our misbehaving Amex credit card back into submission.  (Which - alas! - will probably only be temporary.  Kids are expensive!)

Note that I own actual municipal bonds, NOT a municipal bond fund.  It's harder to catch peaks in price like this if you own a fund.  (Or so my Dad, who is "Mr. Municipal Bond Fund Investor" himself, tells me.)

May February 2016 be a prosperous month for you!

Stupendously Stupid Persistant Debt!!

Well, it finally happened.  We maxed out our Amex credit card.

Yep, we are now carrying $15,000.00 worth of unsecured, high interest debt.  STUPID, STUPID, STUPID!!

Here's how it all happened:

1. In October we had to replace all four tires on Grump's car.
2. In November Grump strolled into the hospital emergency room, and when he left the hospital two days later his appendix was gone.
3. As soon as Grump got out of the hospital, (as Sweetie was driving him home, in fact!), Sweetie's car broken down, and required ridiculously expensive repairs.
4. Early this month we finally had to replace the roof on our house.

Now bear in mind that all this spending is IN ADDITION TO the normal day-to-day living stuff that two kids and three adults do, and it's not quite as unbelievably stupid that we now have a maxed out a credit card.

Because we don't like to pay the obscene interest rates charged by credit card companies, Grump decided that now would be a great time to cash in some savings and pound down this stupid debt.  Of course, as seemingly happens every time we need some savings, the stock market has been tanking recently.  It looked like we were going to have to take a beating one way or another, either by paying ridiculously high interest rates, or selling stocks when they are losing value.

Fortunately Granddad was able to come to the rescue!  He had convinced us several years ago to diversify our savings into municipal bonds in addition to stocks, and with the current low interest rates the value of municipal bonds is actually UP.  He looked at our bond portfolio, chose one that was a good candidate for selling, (inflated value combined with a low rate of return to maturity), and sold it for us.  Ta da!  Now we have an extra $9,000.00 to use to fight our stupid debt.

The moral of this story, (besides the obvious fact that DEBT SUCKS AND SHOULD BE AVOIDED AT ALL COSTS!), is that it is wise to diversify your savings.  Note that we invest in the actual municipal bond itself, NOT MUNICIPAL  BOND FUNDS!  Also, investing in municipal bonds takes a bit more work than investing in a stock fund, (there are more ways that the corrupt financial industry can rip you off with bonds than stocks), so it helps if you have a knowledgeable Granddad to guide you.

We ain't out of this debt disaster by any means yet, and for all I know more debt may be coming our way, (God forbid!), but at least we have a viable plan to chip away at it without taking a loss on our stock funds, or paying ludicrously high interest rates.

IMHO everyone should look at diversifying their savings into some municipal bonds.  Besides their ability to sometimes gain value while stocks lose value, in most cases they are also tax free!  But remember to buy the bond itself, not the tax fund.  And PLEASE find someone who knows the bond market very well to guide you.

Online Income Statement - December 2015

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly from December 2015.

Good:

After that health scare back in November, (as you may remember, I wound up in the emergency room to have my appendix removed!), I seem to be getting my health back.  Hooray!  Without good health, nothing else matters.  Grump, Sweetie, Dodong, Kuya, and Lola are all healthy at the moment, and doing well.

We did have a child who died at a very young age in the womb, (Angel, to whom I shamefully haven't written a letter in a long time), for whom if there were a way to get her life back, I would trade a substantial portion of my savings.  Because she never had an independent existence my attachment to her isn't as strong as it is to our other two kids, but if push-came-to-shove I bet I would sacrifice a lot for her.  (We have two friends who lost their son to colon cancer just before he turned 30, and trust me, both of them would give up everything they have, even their lives, if it could bring him back to life.)

I can't overstate it: good health is priceless.

I'm still employed, at a job that pays fairly well, and has good benefits, (particularly the health insurance).

Kuya is at a good school he likes, and where he is doing well.

Dodging is growing and learning.

Lola is a godsend, helping us tremendously with the kids.

And Sweetie is her normal wonderful self.

Bad:

While I am still employed, my job kinda stinks.  (As does most everybody else's, as best I can gather.)   Part of this is just the conflict between my personality and large bureaucracies.  I've never really enjoyed being an employee of a large corporation, but it's the best way I have with my skill set to earn lots of money, so I try to bear with it as best I can.  While early retirement / financial independence isn't in the cards for me, (I'm in my late fifties with two young kids and a wife to support), we do save as best we can.  We read Mr. Money Mustache and other blogs, ( Rock Star Finance is a great one!), but at this point I think that having accumulated "fuck you" money is enough of an accomplishment for me.

Online income has shriveled to practically nothing.  I made less than $50.00 on Clickworker/UHRS for the month.  Blah!  As for Adsense, I notice that folks who "make a living online", (whatever that means), are even commenting on YouTube that Adsense sucks.  And that's not all ..... Pat Flynn of Smart Passive Income has now advised AGAINST writing articles online for cash, (that's how I started out attempting to make money online, by the way), and even that crazy YouTuber King Human is starting to warn against using some shaky techniques he championed in the past, and advising folks not to quit their day jobs until they figure out how to "make bank online".

The point of this is that I don't think you'll make much, if any, money online unless you have a product or service to sell, in which case the internet is just another form of marketing.  Sure, maybe you'll make big bucks as an affiliate marketer, in which case I would bet that you have the personality that would also do well with Amway or any other multi-level marketing company.

Ugly:

We now have SEVEN THOUSAND DOLLARS of credit card debt!!   Yuck, yuck, yuck, and double-quadruple YUCK!  This is pathetic and embarrassing and needs to change!  Fortunately I finally believe that we are all onboard to drastically reducing our spending for the year.  We'll see.

Our roof is leaking.  Ouch!!  Just what we need, more debt!

There, in more detail than I'm sure anyone wants to know about, is the current state of our finances.  I just hope we don't have to dig into our saving to pay off this STUPID debt.

Online Income Statement - November 2015

Ya know, I'm starting to think that this, "earn extra money on the internet" is just a bunch of hooey.  Yeah, if you've got a product or service to market the internet can be a great marketing tool, but as far as a place to earn cash in its own right ..... ha!

Based on that introduction you would probably assume that November was another weak month for UHRS earnings, and you know what .... you're correct!  Payouts from UHRS are drying up faster than a free beer stand in the middle of the Arabian desert.

These are our pathetic Clickworker/UHRS earnings for November/2015:

11/04  -  $32.12  (Not bad, but just wait!)

11/12  -  $26.46  (Still okay)

11/18  -  $10.19  (UGH!!)

11/26  -  $17.60  (Blah)

That's not even $100.00 for the month, and I was TRYING to earn money on this craziness!  Back in June, when I was making $200/month, it looked like I had found a way to help pay off some (stupid consumer spending) bills, but now it looks like UHRS is, at best, a time consuming way to make some beer money.  Sure, if you're gonna waste the time playing Candy Crush Saga anyway maybe UHRS is a better use of your time, but life is short, and there are other things that just might be more worthy of your attention.

And yes, December will probably be a HORRID month for UHRS earnings because, (as you can tell), I've kinda lost interest in it.  (And to cheat a bit and give you a glimpse into the future, in December I did something even dumber, and signed up for some survey sites.)

Okay, so if extra earnings were off this month, how well did we control our spending?  Let me just come out and say it: it was a BAD month!

If $600 for tires and $50 for an after hours clinic visit was painful last month, then consider this: Grump wound up having an emergency appendectomy, and the day after he got out of the hospital Sweetie's car expensively broke down.  OUCH!

Grump has fairly good insurance where he works, (although Obama has been chipping away at it recently, increasing its cost to him, and reducing its benefits), so we are hoping our total costs for his operation will be less than $400.00 .  Sweetie's car was another issue entirely.  To get it back on the road cost us $2,300.00!

Every penny of these new-and-unexpected expenses went straight on our American Express credit card, the balance of which, even after we stretched to make some big payments, is climbing inexorably towards $5,000.00.  UGH!

Like I said last month, I'm not sure what to do about all this.  Sweetie thinks we should try to sell the condo we own in South Carolina, because every time it becomes vacant it kills our cash flow, but Grump thinks we should keep it, as rents will probably go up in the future, and someday we will have the mortgage paid off.  Who knows?

Maybe December will be a better month?

At the moment I can't recommend Clickworker/UHRS to any but the most bored of you with lots of idle time on your hands, so if you want to find a link to it, you'll have to page down to a prior month's entry.

Happy Holidays all, and I sincerely hope your finances fared better in November than ours did!

Online Income Statement - October/2015

Clickworker, oh Clickworker!  Why hast thou abandoned me?

Not to be overly dramatic about it, but this was the first month since I started using UHRS thru Clickworker that I failed to reach the minimum payout amount, (only $5.00), for a week.  Ugh.

These are our Clickworker/UHRS earnings for October/2015:

10/01  -  $41.68

10/07  -  $31.50

10/14  -  zippo, goose eggs, nada!  (And YES, I did try to earn money this week!)

10/21  -  $15.87

10/28  -  $28.02

That's a grand total of $117.07, and while not bad, October should have been better.  In the middle of the month UHRS just plain stunk!!

Quite honestly, the Clickworker/UHRS earnings for November will probably be even worse, because all that month I will be participating in NaNoWriMo, and attempting to complete my novel of at least 50,000 words.  (If you want to check it out, you can read it in unedited, rough draft form here: http://www.arph001.com/a-piece-of-work-in-progress/ .  Just don't expect to read a literary masterpiece, okay!)  I won't make any money from NaNoWriMo, but it should be a lot more fun than plodding thru endless Clickworker/UHRS tasks for pennies each.

So while extra earnings may be a bit off this month, (I'm still going strong at my day job, thank God!), how is the other side of the financial equation coming, namely spending?  Uh ..... cough, cough, cough.  Did you have to ask?

Our so called "signed agreement" is a complete joke at the moment, as we eat out and spend money with abandon.  The balance on the AMEX credit card is soaring ever higher, and will probably be above $2,000.00 as you read this.  Bad, bad, bad, bad!!

But .... I do have to admit that not all of it is our fault.  We had to buy four new tires for Old Grump's car this month, which set us back $600.00 .  And we had a few unusual medical bills, such as a $50.00 charge at an after hours clinic when Grump twisted his ankle.

I'm not sure what to do about this.  It's so damn hard to consistently scale back spending to just the "bare necessities",  and Sweetie has made it clear she will NOT get a job until Dodong is in school, which may be three or more years away.

If Clickworker/UHRS earnings wither up, (which they may in November), then things may really get tight around here.

Bah, humbug!  And it's not even December yet!

I can't give it an enthusiastic plug this month, but if you'd like to try your hand at earning some money via Clickworker/UHRS, you can read my (old) review of my experiences with it here:“http://buyingnirvana.com/words/clickworker-the-good-the-bad-and-the-ugly/”.  If you do decide to "damn the torpedoes" and sign up, please consider doing so using my affiliate link, http://www.clickworker.com/become-a-clickworker?utm_source=765696&utm_campaign=CW4CW&utm_medium=email .

Until next month, good luck with your online earnings!

P.S.  -  we just got our Sam's Club credit card bill in the mail today.  $630.00!!  Good God!  I think we need to go back to Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University.
